Big Bend Hot Springs Project - Shasta County, California
Big Bend Hot Springs is located in the town of Big Bend, in northern California.
The site has extraordinary geothermal springs and wells and is on the Pit
River between two volcanoes, Mt. Shasta and Lassen Peak. Big Bend Hot Springs
is in a big transition phase, so please stay tuned and thanks for your patience!
Important News:
- Big Bend Hot Springs is currently CLOSED until further notice. We are working hard on the process of completing a huge list of Shasta County-required permits, repairs, and code upgrades.
- Winter 2012 UPDATE: We are preparing to submit building plans to the county for a new soaking pool area (wheel-chair accessible), caretaker's residence, yoga building, new footbridge, a greenhouse, improved roads and parking, and a new water system. We have completed a large submittal (which took us fourteen months to complete) to Shasta County to get our commercial Use Permit. When the Shasta County Planning Commission grants us out conditional Use Permit in January, we will then finally be allowed to apply for building permits and then required to complete most of the campground/tub improvements before we can open to the public. YIKES!
- Progress from the past three years: Our first building- a restroom and shower complex- is completed, and has a 2000 gallon septic system and a new potable cold water well. Our Master Plan has been formalized and Phase One has been submitted to Shasta County for approval. Much work has been done to remove illegal structures, prevent erosion, improve habitat for plants, animals, and fungi, repair paths and roads, care for gardens and orchards, create new hiking trails, and establish relationships with local Pit River Nation Indians.
- The "Big Bend Hot Springs Project" (BBHSP), a not-for-profit group, (including local community members and a large network of allies) are stewarding the land in the most humble and gentle ways we have learned.
- BBHSP is run by an inclusive group of stewards who see this as a community
project. Representatives of BBHSP and members of the Big Bend community
are now beginning the gradual work of healing all relations and bringing the special unique property
back to its full potential.
Big Bend Hot Springs Project Core Goals:
1. To preserve and protect this sacred land and the water resources as a natural area
and wildlife sanctuary.
2. To re-open the small-scale public camping and soaking business (closed
since 2006).
3. To develop a model sustainable permaculture facility with geothermally heated greenhouses to grow food.
4. To honor the ancestors, and work with 2012 descendants of the Madesi band of Pit River Indians, who once lived here.
